Learn moreCMS SEO
CMS SEO is the practice of optimizing a website for search engines within the constraints of its content management system. Every platform — WordPress, Shopify, Wix, or a custom build — has its own technical quirks, and we fix them at the source so your site ranks on its own merits, not despite its CMS.
What CMS SEO Is
A content management system gives you convenience: pages, products, and blog posts without writing code. That convenience comes with compromises — auto-generated URLs, rigid templates, plugin dependencies, and default settings never designed for search engines. Most businesses never notice until they check why competitors outrank them.
CMS SEO is the discipline of fixing all of that: auditing how your platform generates, links, and serves its pages, then optimizing every layer — technical, on-page, content, and authority — around the platform's real constraints. Below are the 9 issues we see on nearly every platform, in one form or another.

Filters for color, size, price, or date generate new URLs with near-identical content. Left unmanaged, these pages compete with your main category pages and dilute crawl budget. We consolidate them with canonical tags and crawl controls so equity flows to the pages that deserve to rank.
Some platforms force URL patterns you can't change — Shopify's /collections/ and /products/ prefixes are the classic example. Google treats each pattern as a separate URL, so variants can end up competing with each other. We map the structure and align internal links and canonicals so the right URL wins.
Tags, author archives, date archives, and empty categories spawn thin pages that Google sees as low value. These bloat index coverage reports and weaken the topical signal of your real pages. We prune, noindex, or merge these archives so every indexed page earns its place.
Every plugin or app adds scripts, stylesheets, and database queries. Stack enough of them and Largest Contentful Paint and Interaction to Next Paint suffer — especially on budget hosting or heavy themes. We audit what's actually needed, replace heavy functionality with lean alternatives, and keep Core Web Vitals in the green.
Some platforms self-canonicalize every page, others leave canonicals absent or pointed at the wrong URL, and many get paginated series wrong. A bad canonical tells Google to index the wrong page. We verify canonical output across templates — especially paginated, filtered, and variant pages — and fix them at the source.
Auto-generated sitemaps often miss paginated archives, omit images, or break hreflang coverage for multilingual setups — so important URLs get discovered late or never. We build complete, segmented sitemaps with proper hreflang and image coverage, and monitor them in Search Console.
Rich results — product cards, reviews, FAQs, breadcrumbs, local business info — come from structured data, and most platforms generate little of it by default. We implement the schema types that matter for your business: Product, Article, FAQPage, LocalBusiness, BreadcrumbList, and more.
CMS media libraries invite oversized uploads: uncompressed hero images, PNG screenshots used as icons, no lazy-loading on galleries. We compress and modernize the pipeline — WebP/AVIF where supported, responsive sizes, lazy loading below the fold — and verify the CDN serves the right file types.
Migrating platforms — or just redesigning a theme — changes URL patterns, navigation, and templates. Without a redirect map and a parity checklist, organic traffic falls off a cliff. We plan redirects before the migration, preserve metadata and structure, and monitor indexation and rankings for weeks after launch.
Our Process
Every engagement follows the same five-stage workflow. The specifics change with your platform, but the order doesn't — each stage builds on the one before it.

We crawl your entire site and review it against SEO fundamentals: indexation, crawlability, site architecture, Core Web Vitals, schema, sitemaps, canonicals, and internal linking. The audit becomes a prioritized action list — platform constraints and all — so we fix what moves the needle first.
Every CMS has its quirks: Shopify's forced URL paths, WordPress's plugin conflicts, Wix's historical JS rendering issues, Magento's layered navigation. We apply the fixes each platform actually allows — working within the system instead of fighting it.
Title tags, meta descriptions, headings, image alt text, and internal links get rewritten and restructured across your key templates and highest-traffic pages. We align each page with one clear search intent and make sure search engines can read exactly what every page is about.
Category and tag pages get real, useful content instead of thin auto-generated copy. We build topic clusters that connect pillar pages to supporting content with logical internal links, turning your CMS from a flat list of pages into a structure that clearly shows your expertise.
Technical SEO and content need backlinks to compete. Our link building team earns relevant, quality links through outreach, guest posting, and digital PR. Every month you get a clear report: what we changed, published, and built — and how rankings, traffic, and conversions responded.

Every engagement starts with a CMS SEO audit, because you should never pay for implementation before you know what is broken. From there, pick the working model that fits your team, your platform, and your budget:
A full technical audit of your CMS setup — indexation, canonicals, sitemaps, schema, speed, and content gaps — delivered as a prioritized fix list. Then we implement: templates repaired, redirects mapped, markup validated. You keep the report either way.
Ongoing CMS SEO month after month: the audit sets the priorities while content, internal linking, and authority building compound over time. Plans run Silver at $800, Gold at $1,500, or Diamond at $2,500 — or hourly at $20 for all services.
Moving from one CMS to another — or rebuilding on the same one — is where most organic traffic is lost. We plan the redirect map, preserve metadata and structure, and monitor indexation and rankings for weeks after launch.
The audit
Every engagement starts with the same audit — a full read of your CMS setup before we recommend a single fix. These are the six checks it covers, each one platform-specific:
We crawl the site the way Google does and compare it against Search Console coverage: what is indexed, what is excluded, what is burning crawl budget, and which valuable pages Google never found. The crawl map is the foundation everything else builds on.
Parameter URLs from filters and search, duplicate product and post paths, canonical conflicts and chains, redirect loops and long chains. We verify every canonical tag resolves to the single URL you want ranking — especially across paginated and filtered templates.
Thin category, tag, and archive pages, duplicated titles and descriptions, broken heading outlines, and internal linking gaps. We map one primary keyword to each key page and flag where pages compete with each other instead of supporting each other.
We inventory the structured data your platform outputs — Product, Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, LocalBusiness — and test it against Google's Rich Results Test. Broken, duplicated, or missing markup gets a per-template fix plan.
Real field data for Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift on your key templates — then the causes: plugin and app bloat, heavy themes, uncompressed images, render-blocking scripts. Fixes are ranked by impact.
Your backlink profile against the competitors outranking you: referring domains, link quality patterns, and the gap between where you are and where the first page starts. This sets the link building target the rest of the engagement works toward.
Straight answers to the questions we hear most about optimizing websites on content management systems.
